Embedding Backend Compatibility
| Backend |
backend: value |
Status |
Notes |
| turbovec |
turbovec (default; auto is an alias) |
✅ Default since v0.29.0 |
ChromaDB-free, quantized vectors in local files. Installed with NeuralMind on Linux, macOS arm64 and Windows AMD64 |
| ChromaDB |
chroma or graph |
⚠️ Deprecated since v0.46.0 |
Needs pip install "neuralmind[chromadb]". Required on platforms without a turbovec wheel, such as Intel macOS: pip installs ChromaDB there but doesn’t select it, so set backend: chroma |
| In-memory |
in_memory |
🧪 Tests and offline use |
The index lives in process memory and isn’t saved |
Note: Pick a backend with backend: in neuralmind-backend.yaml; there is no command-line flag or environment variable for it. Every backend keeps its index on the local machine. There is no server or database backend, and PostgreSQL/pgvector and LanceDB aren’t supported. neuralmind doctor shows the resolved backend.

Known Issues & Workarounds
Issue: Test suite hangs on test_e2e_seat_governance.py
- Affected: All versions
- Status: Under investigation (pre-existing, not a regression)
- Workaround: Run tests with
--ignore=tests/test_e2e_seat_governance.py or use pytest --timeout=30 to catch hangs
Issue: Windows Task Scheduler + Python Venv
- Affected: Auto-discovery on Windows with venv
- Status: Documented in Scheduling Guide
- Workaround: Use full path to python.exe in venv
